Critical Incident Stress Debrief (CISD) is designed to assist the person(s) of a particular agency, Unit, group or department with processing a traumatic incident or event.
This is NOT to take place of, or in lieu of counseling provided by certified counselor or psychologist.
CISD is to serve as an event specific focus group to allow all of those affected by or participated in, an outlet to discuss, decompress, cope and process the said traumatic incident. By being surrounded by his/her Brothers In Arms, a person is allowed to process, grief, and understand. When successfully done, and with proper support, he or she is less likely to be self-removed from his job, profession, family or even one’s self.
This type of group setting allows those to share who have “been there, done that.”
In that, other than a trained moderator in CISD/M and a trained mental health professional, all others there will have been involved in the incident regardless of their role.
CISD can be utilized by LEO, firefighters, 1st Responders, SWAT, SRT, military units and other groups who may have experienced a traumatic event. Therefore, a participant could be detective, road officer, deputy, supervisor, medic, and even dispatcher.
Stressful events touch and affect people in different ways. Our job is to provide an outlet to process and cope with a stress related, traumatic incident.
